A twenty-one-year-old man from the village of Vendhomme in St George’s who appeared at the St. George’s Magistrate Court on Tuesday in connection with the January 22nd shooting incident in Four Roads has been denied bail.
Treind Charles, a young man who was branded as wanted by the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) following the Four Roads shooting, was told that he would remain behind bars at Her Majesty’s Prison, until his next court date on March 6th. This followed strong objections to a request for bail made on his behalf by defense lawyer Arley Gill.
The application was made before Acting Chief Magistrate Teddy St. Louis, who presided over the proceeding at the Number One Magistrate’s Court. Gill contended that his client maintains his innocence and therefore his liberty is of paramount importance. The defense lawyer went on to say that despite his client’s previous records he is no flight risk, he further added that his client did what he had to by turning himself over to the police the moment he got to know that he was listed as a wanted man.
The lawyer further argued to the court that concerns can be alleviated by putting the necessary conditions in place to ensure compliance, among those suggested were, surrendering of travel documents, reporting conditions and no contact with the virtual complainant.
The prosecution’s objection to having Charles placed on bail was based on a number of factors. Among them, Charles’ past record, his attempt to evade the police after the shooting, the weapon allegedly used in the shooting is yet to be found and the possibility of Charles not showing up for his trial.
After reviewing all prevailing circumstances, including the fact that the victim in the matter, recently release from hospital after some two weeks is still recovering from his injury, Magistrate St Louis decided that Charles should be remanded until the next court date, which is set as March 6th 2020.
According to information reaching the Grenada Informer, the incident for which Charles appeared before the court dated back to January 22nd, 2020 and is alleged to have taken place in a house in the Four Roads area.
What led to the shooting remains unclear weeks after, however there are speculations that it stemmed from a heated argument over a shipment of drugs that made its way to the area earlier that day.
The victim, Vondee Joseph was shot in the leg. He was taken to the General Hospital where he remained as a patient until his release last week.
